Nadal, Ferrer cruise through to quarters

Top seeds Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer lost just seven games between them as they eased into the quarter-finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

The two Spaniards were in a hurry to get things done as number one seed Ferrer beat American qualifier Wayne Odesnik 6-2 6-1 and number two Nadal followed him with a 6-0 6-4 victory over Argentina's Martin Alund.

It was not all good for three-time defending champion Ferrer, who faced seven break points on his own serve, saving six, while converting five of the 14 he created himself.

Nadal, meanwhile, raced through the first set, losing just four points on serve, before his opponent hit his stride in the second to make life a little more difficult.

Ferrer will next face Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who beat another Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, 6-4 6-3, while Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, a 6-2 6-2 winner over Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia, awaits Nadal.

Third seed Nicolas Almagro, also twice a winner here, came through two close sets in his all-Spanish clash with Tommy Robredo to claim a 6-4 7-6 (7/4) victory.

There were also wins for Fabio Fognini, Santiago Giraldo and eighth seed Horacio Zeballos.

Defending champion Sara Errani eased into the quarter-finals of the women's draw as the top three seeds all won.

Number one seed Errani of Italy broke the resistance of Canada's Eugenie Bouchard in a first-set tie-break before racing through the second for a 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 win.

She will next play fifth seed Kiki Bertens of Holland, who eased past Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1 6-2.

Meanwhile second seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain saw off France's Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-1 6-2 and number three Alize Cornet overcame Spaniard Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-4 6-4.

Not all the seeds progressed though.

Fourth seed Irina-Camelia Begu and eighth seed Romina Oprandi were beaten respectively by Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Karin Knapp, who will face each other in the quarter-finals.

There were also wins for Francesca Schiavone and Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
